Technicolor Quick Challenges

I was torching with a friend one day and we decided to have what we called a "Pier One Quick Challenge".  I had their holiday catalogue in my bag.  So we each picked one item for both of us to interpret in glass.  We just wanted the "theme" and not the specific item. So we had a quick peek and then shut the book.

This is "peacocks off mandrel"  and here is my interpretation.  I made his tail feathers primarily transparent, so he could sit on a window ledge and glow.  It worked.  this will be posted in my Etsy shop later today.  I'm thinking if I were to revisit this one, I'd of course spend more time planning, but also might acid etch the tail for a different look.

My friend chose a Zen Turtle for the challenge.  I'll find it and post it another day.  It was a funny one too, because my turtle looked like it was part frog.  Amphibian- no need to quibble!  See you tomorrow.

Class Starts Today

Besides teaching glass, I love taking glass classes.  This week, I'm taking a Loren Stump class called "Toons".  I think it will be time to channel our inner Disney.  The Disney I always liked was Cinderella and their wonderful movies when I was growing up.  But sometimes we get requests from Beads of Courage, that definitely call for other Disney skills.  I'm hoping to learn from one of the best and to learn other skills that will apply to my other work that I do.  I know the class will be great fun and it's a my local glass shop, FlameTree Glass.  They are great folks.

So my blog posts might be a bit intermittent over the next few days. But I will show you what we make and chat about what I'm learning.

See you sometime soon

Caitlin Hyde's Class

It's been a blast hosting Mallory (Rosebud101) and hanging with Caitlyn Hyde the last few days.

I'm lucky enough to be in Caitlin Hyde's class for Southern Flames today. (Don't you just love her beads pictured above?) I'll have some photos next week of the class and my fellow students. We're making pictorial beads and are practicing masking and pattern techniques.

Tomorrow night is our Southern Flames meeting featuring Caitlin's demo. I'm feeling rather lucky this week- all this glassy goodness.

I'll let you know next week more about the class and my delightful house guest and fellow student. See you Sunday!

Heads Up! Planning Another Trip- Glass Camp

I am so excited to be attending the Appalachian Center For Crafts' glass flameworking class with Fred Birkhill and Shane Fero. (woo hoo!)

I leave on Sunday and will return Friday night. Both teachers are highly esteemed in the glass world and my friends and I have been guessing that there will be minimal beadmaking and more lessons that will take us out of our usual way of working with glass. (she reports with glee!) Rumor has it that possibly we might get a chance to pull our own rods using the hot shop! Sounds rather toasty, but fun.

I am happy to tell you that next summer, I will be teaching a week long class for the Appalachian Center for Craft in July, so this year will give me a little experience to see how classes are set up in advance. (email me studiomarcy@gmail.com for more info about my class)

I will not be blogging about this class as it's happening, because I am not sure of the internet connections there, but I will continue to post daily on my blog. I've been writing in advance, so you'll still get the good stuff. When I return, I'll tell you about class and what I learned.

So, I need to mention, that if you were planning on purchasing something from my Studio Marcy etsy shop in the near future, it's a good idea to do it soon. My last trip to the Post Office will be Friday, as it is closed on Saturday for the holiday. After that, I will be mailing any purchases the following Monday after I've returned.

See you tomorrow.
